Who needs a fire safety plan on the North Shore

Under Section 2.8 of the BC Fire Code, a fire safety plan is required for any building with a fire alarm system, for assembly and care occupancies, for residential buildings above a few suites, and for industrial and storage buildings above the Code’s size limits. On the North Shore that covers nearly every strata building along Lonsdale and Marine Drive, every office and retail building, hotels, schools and daycares, and the industrial and port-related sites along the Burrard Inlet waterfront. Both fire departments check for a current plan during routine inspections and after alarm or sprinkler work.

Does West Vancouver count as North Vancouver?

Our strata’s plan is from the developer. Is that enough?

Usually not for long. Developer plans are written before the building is occupied and rarely name a real emergency contact or reflect later renovations. Both North Vancouver departments expect the plan to be reviewed every year.
